If you’ve searched the web for different companies or professional writers to help you write a business plan, you’ve probably seen prices range anywhere from $200 to $5,000 and up.  It’s definitely quite a range of pricing that should raise questions about the quality of your business plan, the planning process, and the people involved with your project.  If you’ve ever shopped around for a plan, talked to different people in the industry; you’ll probably find yourself looking at some impressive sample plans, as well as find people who have legal, accounting, marketing, and business administration degrees.

If you’ve done your homework, you’ll probably find that if you’re looking for a company that provides a plan written by a team of experts in legal, accounting, marketing, and business, you’re probably looking at $5,000 and up.  If you think that’s expensive, try hiring a consultant who will work with you in person; detailing all the components of your business.  You’ll have to pay that consultant by hour likely starting at $50 an hour.  How long would you like that consultant to spend working on your business plan?  A good sized project can go from $10,000 to $20,000 an up.

If you’re like most entrepreneurs, you probably realize that you don’t need a $5,000 business plan.  When you think about it, there’s no reason why you can’t write your business plan yourself since it’s your vision and your plan.  The key trade-off however is time.  There are a lot of components to a business plan, and it takes most entrepreneurs more than a month to put a good plan together; especially if they’ve never done it before.  A good plan writing company should be able to put a team of writers, researchers, and analysts together and have a good business plan draft done in about a day.  Think about the variance there.  All of a sudden, a few thousand dollars might be a pretty good deal; especially when the people writing your plan have written hundreds of plans in different industries.  The time it takes a good plan writing company to write your plan will be significantly less than doing it yourself; ultimately saving you on costs (and headaches)!
